Radiation Oncology Program
Because different cancers respond to different approaches, FHCIW offers a variety of the most sophisticated technology available to detect and treat cancer, including:
External Photon Beam Therapy uses high energy x-rays that selectively target and kill cancer cells while sparing normal tissues.
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) combines a high degree of computer optimization with a highly specialized delivery system to minimize the radiation dose to nearby or critical organs, allowing treatment of tumors that were previously not treatable due to their location, as well as to provide better treatment for many tumors.
Electron Beam Therapy utilizes electrons to treat shallow areas, including skin cancers, without delivering significant radiation to underlying tissues.
High Dose Rate (HDR) Afterloading for pulmonary, gynecological tumors and prostate tumors, used both alone and with external radiation to deliver high doses of radiation directly to tumor sites.
Prostate Seed Implants deliver radiation in a single surgical procedure performed by the radiation oncologist along with urologists and radiation physicists by placing radioactive seeds precisely inside the prostate gland using ultrasound guidance.

The goal of chemotherapy is to destroy cancer cells. The decision to administer chemotherapy is made based on its potential for destroying these cells. Determining which particular treatment is right for you depends on your general physical health, the type of cancer you have and at what stage it was diagnosed, and the goal of therapy that you and your doctor have agreed upon.

We have assembled the best team of medical professionals, combined with state-of-the art technology to create better health and healing.
When it comes to caring for your heart, we realize that we are caring for more than the physical heart – we are caring about you the whole person.
A Leader in Cardiac Care
Since 1967, Florida Hospital Orlando, has earned a reputation as a leader in advanced cardiac care. The cardiac program is ranked among the top five cardiac centers nationwide for open-heart surgery. This dedication and quality of service is now extended to the local community being served by Florida Hospital Waterman in Tavares.
Our medical staff and healthcare professional are committed to a healthy community. Our cardiac services team focuses on prevention of heart disease, procedures that assist in early diagnosis, and rapid treatment for cardiac care. Florida Hospital Waterman’s Cardiac Services, combined with a close affiliation with Florida Hospital Orlando, gives local residents easy access to the best cardiac care.
Emergency Department
The Emergency Department offers rapid identification and non-invasive intervention for cardiac events.
Emergency Department thrombolytic delivery times at Florida Hospital Waterman exceed national standards. The rapid treatment of heart attacks with thrombolytic drugs can save heart muscle from further damage.
Cardio-Diagnostics
The Cardio-Diagnostic Department features specialized equipment that aids physicians in detecting heart disease. EKG’s, Holter monitoring, echocardiograms, and stress testing are the most commonly performed procedures. These diagnostic tools allow cardiac specialists to assess patient health and detect potential problems.
Cardiac Catheterization
Cardiac catheterization enables physicians to monitor the pumping function of heart and to examine the coronary arteries. This procedure helps diagnose the problem accurately and allows the physician to choose the most effective treatment.
Cardiac Ablation
FHW is the first facility in the area equipped for cardiac ablation. Cardiac ablation is primarily used to treat rapid heartbeats that begin in the upper chambers of the heart, known as supraventricular tachycardias. The procedure is performed by inserting narrow, flexible wires (catheters) into the blood vessel through the groin and under the collar bone. The catheters are navigated to the heart muscle by a fluoroscope, a machine that provides continuous “live” images of the catheter and tissue. Once the catheter reaches the heart, electrodes at its tip gather data that pinpoints the location of the faulty electrical circuit. During this “electrical mapping,” the physician sedates the patient and activates the arrhythmias that are causing the problem to ensure the precise location of the affected tissue. A catheter is then used to conduct energy to the site, eliminating the arrhythmias that originated there.
Electrophysiology (EP) Studies
FHW is also the first facility in the area equipped for electrophysiology (EP) studies. An EP study is a procedure in which thin catheters are inserted into a vein or artery and guided to the heart under x-ray, where it can perform specific, essential measures of the heart’s electrical activity and pathways. These measurements are particularly helpful in the diagnosis of abnormally fast heart rhythms (tachycardias) or abnormally slow heart rhythms (bradycardias).

Ushering in a new era in CT imaging. Powerful, state-of-the-art volume computed tomography (VCT) technology now in use at Florida Hospital Waterman helps pinpoint disease earlier and gives doctors more information to plan and track appropriate treatment. By non-invasively capturing any organ in one second, and images of the heart and coronary arteries in five heartbeats, the 64-slice VCT offers something that no other CT scan has in the past.
With just a single rotation, the system creates 64 images, resulting in unprecedented anatomical coverage. These images are combined to form a three-dimensional view of the patients’ anatomy to aid in diagnosing disease, viewing internal abnormalities, and assessing the extent of trauma damage.
During a typical VCT procedure, the patient is placed on a table and moved through the scanner while an x-ray tube rotates around the patient’s body. A computer then processes this information and displays the corresponding images on a computer screen. According to Fred Wittenstein, M.D., Chief of Diagnostic Imaging at Florida Hospital Waterman, “This technique avoids any superimposition of organs or tissues upon one another that might occur during other types of x-ray studies.”
The VCT’s ability to routinely deliver unmatched image quality and faster acquisition time is key for cardiac, vascular, neurology, and emergency examinations. The increased speed facilitates data acquisition for patients who have difficulty holding their breath, such as elderly or pediatric patients. And, because doctors obtain incredibly detailed images of the anatomy, they can make more informed diagnostic decisions in a non-invasive manner. For example, if a patient reports chest pain, a 10-second VCT exam can rule out several conditions very quickly or pinpoint a problem early in the process.
The 64-Slice VCT system can also be used when studying cardiovascular conditions, including stroke and blood clots, as well as other conditions involving the brain, colon or lungs.
FHW also had the first all digital flat panel cardiovascular imaging system in Lake County. With this advanced cardiovascular imaging system, physicians are able to see clearly inside a patient with digital real-time imaging while guiding catheters and other medical devices to areas of the body needing treatment. Because physicians can image more anatomy in a single series, a complete study and better images can be done with fewer x-ray images, less x-ray dose and fewer injections of contrast dye when compared to current systems.
FHW also introduced the first high-field open magnet (MR) in Lake County. This new technology eliminates performance barriers while still delivering all the patient comfort benefits of open MR.
The FHW Mammography Center is a FDA certified facility. Breast screening procedures include ultrasound and low-dose mammography with computer-aided detection (CAD), a sophisticated computer program that is digitally linked to our mammography systems. CAD has been shown in studies to increase the accuracy of mammography by up to 20%. The technology works by reviewing digitized mammograms and marking areas of suspected abnormalities. The radiologist then reviews these areas again to determine if they need further study. CAD can enhance the radiologist’s performance by drawing attention to suspicious density changes that may have been overlooked, and it can improve the rate of detection of small breast abnormalities, thus increasing the chance of successful treatment. For more information, please call the Mammography Center at 352.253.3235. To schedule a mammogram, please call 352.253.3700.
Breast MRI gives women a new high-tech tool in the fight against breast cancer at Florida Hospital Waterman. Breast MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) raises breast cancer detection to the next level by taking highly detailed images for more accurate diagnosis. This non-invasive procedure is a breakthrough for women with dense breasts or implants, or women at high risk for breast cancer, and can be used to track chemotherapy response in patients undergoing treatment for breast cancer.
Breast MRI results are analyzed by computer-assisted detection (CAD) technology that can identify breast masses that may not be seen on mammography or ultrasound. “Early detection of breast cancer offers women the best chance for successful treatment,” says radiologist Idelisa Torres-Berastain, M.D. “Together, breast MRI and CAD provide more accurate results that virtually eliminate the need for additional, more invasive procedures.”
An important advance in diagnosing breast cancer, MRI-guided breast biopsies are performed when the area of concern is not seen by ultrasound or mammography, making it possible to biopsy suspicious tissue that would otherwise have been very difficult to target.

Helping People With Sleep Disorders
Sleep
Restful sleep is very important to your health – not too much or too little sleep but just the right amount. It’s estimated that two out of every five Americans have a serious sleep disorder. Sleep disorders can interfere with the ability to fall asleep, maintain sleep or cause excessive daytime sleepiness. These disorders, which can affect all types of people at all ages, stem from a wide variety of causes.
Common Sleep Disorders
Apnea – periods of not breathing, as frequently as several hundred times during sleep. Causes of apnea include a blockage of the upper airway and diseases of the central nervous system. Apnea victims may experience excessive daytime sleepiness, high blood pressure, rapid weight gain, morning headaches, personality changes, impotence, signs of heart failure or enlargement and heavy snoring. They may also have sleep attacks during the day, similar to those associated with narcolepsy.
Insomnia – the inability to sleep. About 70 million Americans experience fragmented and disrupted sleep. Causes of insomnia include stress, breathing disorders, temporary pain and misuse or overuse of sleeping pills. Daytime symptoms often include headaches, hypertension, and concentration/memory difficulties.
Narcolepsy – sudden and uncontrollable attacks of excessive sleepiness during the day. This disorder causes an individual to sleep at inappropriate times such as while driving, eating or in meetings. Common complaints include frequent, vivid nightmares or hallucinations upon falling asleep, sudden muscular weakness when angry, surprised or amused and momentary paralysis upon awakening.
Parasomnia - somnambulism (sleep-walking) nightmares and night terrors.
Nocturnal Myoclonus and “Restless legs” Syndrome – multiple arousals during sleep, excessive daytime drowsiness, aching muscles upon awakening and crawling or restless sensations in the legs. This condition is often mistaken for insomnia.
Other Disorders – seizures, bruxism (grinding of teeth) and other conditions that cause improper sleep patterns.
Admission Procedure
A physician referral is needed for the Florida Hospital Waterman Disorder Program.
The program recommends a referral from primary care physician to a consultant for sleep medicine. This consultant will be Neurologist or Pulmonologist with special training in sleep disorders.
You will be asked to complete a questionnaire concerning your medical, psychological and sleep history. This information will be reviewed by the consulting physician and then he or she will complete an extensive sleep history and physical. At that time a recommendation for evaluation, treatment, and/or diagnostic sleep studies will occur.
Laboratory testing usually takes place between 7:30 pm and 7:30 am. Once you are admitted to the program you will spend one or two nights in the sleep laboratory. For a more conducive sleep setting, we encourage you to bring your own pajamas, robe and favorite pillow.
A specialized professional, called a polysomnographer, will use the most advanced diagnostic equipment to record and monitor your sleep patterns, heart activities, breathing and body movements. Afterward, your treatment will be under the direct supervision of your consulting and/or primary care physicians.
