Paperless Medical Record Implemented
As of 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 21, 2006, Florida Hospital Waterman became one of the first Adventist Health System hospitals to implement iConnect, a state-of-the-art automated clinical information system that supports the delivery of more effective and more efficient patient care at the bedside. 

 

This new patient management system allows caregivers to update the medical record in real time, and immediately access patient history, lab and x-ray reports, and other test results at the bedside.  This “paperless medical record” system also supports better communication and information-sharing among caregivers – for example, linking doctor and nurse with the pharmacist so that all pharmaceutical therapy is monitored and managed to improve medication outcomes. 

By integrating the patient care process at every level, this new patient management system improves clinical accuracy; provides immediate access to patient histories, lab and x-ray reports, and other test results; allows timely retrieval of medical records from prior patient hospitalizations; and facilitates optimal information sharing and communication among all of those providing care at the same time, from various locations throughout the hospital. 

With improved patient safety, communications and information-sharing as its focus, this quality care initiative provides technologically superior support in the patient care setting, while strictly maintaining patient privacy.  “The system is able to monitor, manage, measure and critique all of the information that is generated daily throughout the patient care process,” explains Brian Liebersbach, M.D., Ph.D., iConnect physician project liaison.  “As a result, caregivers have more time to spend with our patients.” 

Matthew D’Albora, Clinical Information Specialist, serves as the iConnect project manager.  In that role, he has helped with the overall design and build of the clinical software, identification of computer and other hardware needed to support the information system, development of training modules, and onsite system testing.

“Since the implementation of iConnect impacts every hospital department, clinical specialists, ancillary staff and other hospital employees have contributed significantly to the development of this new patient management system,” says Matthew.  “With workstation renovations and the installation of new computer equipment, everyone is very pleased about this new opportunity.”
