Mammography is an x-ray examination of the breast used to detect and diagnose breast disease, primarily in women. The goal of mammography is early detection of breast cancer. Early detection has been shown to reduce mortality, or death, from breast cancer. Very often detection is possible before a lump or mass is able to be felt by touch (palpable).
Florida Hospital Waterman is proud to introduce our newly renovated mammography suite and the addition of Digital Mammography units. These units, produced by the company Hologic, offer the latest technology in solid-state detectors which produce images on computer screen rather than x-ray film, allowing the radiologist to observe increased contrast and detail in the tissues.
From the patient's perspective, the examination is essentially the same as traditional mammography, including compression of the breast to obtain a quality exam. There is no need to wait for films to be developed, therefore exam times are faster, which means less time spent in the breast imaging suite.
Florida Hospital Waterman has obtained accreditation by the American College of Radiology as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence. The only mammography provider to have obtained accreditation in Lake County, this designation signifies that Florida Hospital Waterman provides these essential services to the community at the highest standards of the radiology profession.
Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Breast Care at Florida Hospital Waterman
We offer a team of expert physicians and oncology nurses, and many of our patients participate in clinical trials that are specific to breast cancer – which means that our patients are often among the first to benefit from the latest treatment options and state-of-the-art technology.
At the same time, our approach is intensely personal and individualized – and patients are included in the treatment planning process every step of the way. Every patient has access to our Breast Care Coordinator, Jacqueline Barrett, R.N., who provides a comprehensive assessment of each patient's emotional and education needs, provides them with support, and can assist in rapidly scheduling appointments with our expert physicians.
