Tavares, FL: Florida Hospital Waterman has received certification from the American College of Radiology for its new digital mammography units. These units, produced by the company Hologic®, offer the latest technology in solid-state detectors which produce images on computer screen rather than x-ray film, allowing the radiologist to observe increased contrast and detail in the tissues.
According to Chief Radiologist, Fred Wittenstein, MD, “Digital mammography improves early detection of breast cancer, particularly in women with dense breast tissue”.
Mammography is an x-ray examination of the breast used to detect and diagnose breast disease. The goal of mammography is early detection of breast cancer, which is very often possible before a lump or mass can be felt by touch. Early detection has been shown to reduce death from breast cancer.
From the patient’s perspective, the digital mammography examination is essentially the same as traditional mammography, including compression of the breast to obtain a quality exam. However, there is no need to wait for films to be developed, and exam times are faster.
Florida Hospital Waterman is also certified by the Food & Drug Administration in Mammography.
